Mayor's Message

Mayor Hoyer

On behalf of the Township Committee, employees, appointed officials, and volunteers I want to wish you all a healthy and happy new year.

We recently conducted the reorganization meeting for the Township and appointed or reappointed many volunteers to various boards, committees, and first responder organizations. While we do employ approximately 30 people, we also rely on more than 60 volunteers.  These knowledgeable and passionate volunteers, including firefighters and rescue squad members, are the life blood of this community. We, on the Township Committee, have the obligation to harness the energy, enthusiasm, ideas, and excitement that come from each individual. I challenge my fellow Committee members to accomplish that through their service on both the Committee and designated liaison roles. I also encourage our residents to consider volunteering on a committee or organization in a role about which they are passionate.

I have lived in the Township for 34 years, reared five children, all educated through the local school system. I have served on several committees over the years, the Township Committee for the last six years and am pleased to continue serving the public. Public participation in government is a hallmark of democracy, and I am especially proud to be of service to this fine municipality.

Fiscal discipline and the financial health of our municipality remain the top priority of this Township Committee, as we take a proactive approach considering new ways outside of property taxes to lessen the burden on our residents. While some of these revenue sources might not fit with everyone’s approval, our overarching goal is being good stewards of West Amwell.

We have a significant project just getting underway having approved the first cannabis business to operate in the Township. While we project that this line of business will bring significant revenue to bolster the long-term financial health of the Township, endeavors like this must be performed responsibly by ensuring that new business development benefits the economic, social, and environmental life of West Amwell Township while maintaining the rural atmosphere that is a cornerstone of living here.

One government mandate is to provide for the safety and security of its residents while preserving its heritage and planning for its future. We are fortunate to live in a community that offers rural living, with nearby access to major cities, recognizing, however, that our world is ever changing. I pledge to strive to make West Amwell Township a great place to live, now and with an eye on the future. I intend to work with my fellow committee and board members to implement the best policies for our residents and can assure you that the best interest of our Township and its residents will always be my priority.

While we will be facing many new challenges, one thing remains the same:  We are here to serve you, our friends and neighbors.

I'm privileged to be your Mayor and I look forward to meeting those of you that I don’t already know.

Gary Hoyer
