West Amwell Township passes an ordinance that permits ECHO housing.

Another option for senior housing in Hunterdon County

“ECHO housing” is another option that has become a “beacon of hope” for many aging parents and/or relatives and their children.

The Hunterdon County Housing Corporation, a non-profit since 1992, has been assisting with the affordable housing needs of Hunterdon residents and in particular encouraging “ECHO housing” as an option for seniors and residents of Hunterdon County. This type of housing permits an aging parent or reIative the opportunity to live independently and close to the family.

ECHO housing, Elder Cottage Housing Opportunity, is a small one or two bedroom cottage like house that locates  temporarily on the family property and is restricted to family. In order to have an ECHO house the homeowner must consider the requirements of the “ECHO ordinance” created by the municipality they live, the required permits and regulations of the placement of the unit and the costs.  Costs might include the pre-built unit, utility hook-ups, permits and a temporary foundation.

Currently, the Hunterdon county Housing Corporation has an “ECHO” unit available for sale.  The price of the unit is $32,000.  If you are interested please contact the Hunterdon County Housing Corporation for details at 908-806-4196 or e-mail us at hchc@co.hunterdon.nj.us.  And for requirements of the “ECHO ordinance in West Amwell on the internet go to www.westamwelltwp.org or call the municipal building at 609-397-2054.
